Hello my science-loving friends! Today I'm going to tell you an extremely interesting fun fact about dolphins! Turns out besides their amazing swimming abilities and superior intelligence, dolphins can also recognize themselves in mirrors - a sign of self-awareness! This is a very complex skill that previously was thought to only exist in humans and some large mammals like apes and chimpanzees!
To prove this, scientists have conducted a series of fascinating experiments. In a 2001 study, they marked a black ink spot on the foreheads of two bottlenose dolphins, then gave them mirrors to look at. The result was that the dolphins tried to rub off the ink spot, showing that they recognized the reflected image as themselves and wanted to "remove the makeup" from that dirty spot! Another study in 2005 also showed that dolphins use mirrors to "check" their bodies, examining areas they can't directly see. Truly an action that clearly demonstrates self-awareness!
What's even more interesting is that scientists discovered that young dolphins can learn to recognize themselves in mirrors faster than adult dolphins. This proves that this species' self-awareness develops over time and with life experience. Another piece of evidence showing that dolphins are not only intelligent but also have a rich inner life, knowing how to contemplate themselves.
